New Jersey Mental Health Assessment & Testing Services

I provide mental health assessment and testing for children, adolescents, teenagers and adults in New Jersey. Types of assessments include: Intellectual, Cognitive, Academic, and Social/Emotional Functioning. Each mental health assessment is based on the client's specific needs and concerns and includes comprehensive treatment recommendations for multiple settings (home, school, work, therapy,etc.). Parents often bring their children in to get tested for learning disabilities.

The mental health testing process begins with a referral question that clarifies the reason for doing the evaluation. Based on the question, age of the client and past history cognitive and/or mental health assessment tools are used to assess intellectual and/or emotional functioning. Cognitive assessments generally address academic achievement, cognitive processing such as attention, memory and social cognition. Mental health assessment identifies issues related to behavior and emotional aspects. These assessments, together with a detailed history, can help answer questions about learning disabilities or competency. Additionally, testing can help identify if there are issues with memory, decision making processes, or if an individual has a learning disability or ADHD.

The results of the assessments can be valuable, however, many individuals find the tasks involved in the assessment process challenging and tiring. Depending on the referral question, assessments can take many hours. We will work together to arrange testing sessions lengths that will allow you to perform your best.

Following the mental health assessment procedure a comprehensive report for each person will be written that includes a list of assessments that were utilized, detailed results of each assessment, a discussion of these results including strengths and weaknesses, and recommended goals and objectives. The results of the mental health testing will be reviewed in a feedback session.

Preparing Your Child/Adolescent/Teenager For Psychological Testing and Assessment

It is a good idea to prepare your child, adolescent, or teenager for mental health testing by letting them know that you realize that their school difficulties are having a big impact on their lives. Mental health testing and assessment can help identify the way that they learn best and help the child optimize those strengths so they can be successful in a school setting. The testing can be explained as a lot of different activities, many of which are like games or puzzles, many are like "school" tasks with which they are familiar.

Parents can either wait or leave and return when the session is over. It's best to assure that your child, adolescent or teenager has had at least 9-10 hours of sleep and a good breakfast before a test session. Medications that are taken on a regular basis should be given at the usual time.

As a masters level clinician I work under the auspices of a licensed clinical psychologist who is responsible for the assessment.
